We had the amazing opportunity to host chess sessions over the course of 2 weeks at Richards Memorial Library, with the idea that children aged 6-11 could play a mini tournament against each other in the end. At our final session, the room felt a bit different. The chessboards were cleared, the pieces packed up for the last time; but before we officially wrapped up, we asked the group one final question:

“What’s one life lesson you’ll take with you from chess?”

The kids reached for sticky notes and started writing. Their answers came quickly, but each one carried something a little different:

And one that even made us pause: You can win even if you are losing”

These notes are still with us, not just a reminder of what our students learned in the sessions, but the meaning behind our time with them. Beyond the Board isn’t just about teaching the game, but creating a space where people as young as 6 can make new friends, fulfill their interests, and discover lessons they’ll take far beyond the chessboard.

To every student who sat down with us, shared the events of their day or summer, or wrote a note, thank you. Everyone, regardless of their age, background, or beliefs, should be able to have the opportunities to pursue something they’re truly excited by, whether it’d be chess, music, sports, or more. At Beyond the Board, our role is to spark that beginning and create spaces where everybody can share what matters to them and find their voice. Because in the end, chess is not only about winning. It’s about who you become and the friends you meet along the way.
